Tooth Decay (Dental Caries)
Tooth decay is the damage caused when germs in the mouth produce acids that eat away a tooth. It can lead to a hole or pit in the tooth, called a dental cavity. If you do not treat them early, it can cause tooth decay leading to pain, infection, and even loss of the tooth. You may have to get the tooth removed.
Tooth decay is a common problem in kids and leads to their rotten teeth over time.
In some cases, the process of tooth decay is so severe that these kids have to go under general anesthesia for treatment and removal of the rotten or damaged teeth.
Foods to avoid
Diet is important in preventing a cavity. When we eat or drink something that contains sugar or starches, bacteria in our mouth use it to produce acids. These acids eat away the tooth's enamel. It is a good habit to brush teeth after meals, in particular after eating sugars.
With a recent rise in preschool tooth decay and kids rotten teeth, dental health experts are giving tips to avoid certain foods and treats. Here are the worst foods for your children:
Candies and sweets
These foods are laden with sugar. Their stickiness also causes the sugar to stay on the tooth surface for a long time and cause a lot of damage to the teeth.
Carbonated drinks
Carbonated soft drinks are the leading source of sugar consumption among children. Carbonated beverages also contain certain acids which erode tooth enamel.
Starchy foods
Foods that contain lots of refined sugar and flour can leave doughy bits between the teeth after eating and should be avoided.
Juices
Fruit juices are sipped slowly over the course of the day by children. It can cause their teeth to constantly get loaded in the sugars from juices and exposed to the acids that are contained in them.
Acidic citrus fruits
Kids often develop a taste for tart citrus fruits such as lemons and limes. But know that frequent sucking on these types of fruits causes their teeth to expose to highly corrosive acids.
Sour candies
Many tangy sour candies are made with sugar and high acid content. These are not good for your children.
Anything that your child sips on all day slowly
Dental health experts say that our habit of snacking between meals slowly is one of the main reasons of cavities and rotten teeth in kids. Limit the snacks between meals, and brush the teeth after having them.
You should always use fluoride-based toothpaste. Fluoride helps preventing the tooth decay process from progressing. It can even reverse the decay process. It also prevents the loss of minerals from the tooth enamel and also reduces its ability to be attacked by bacteria.
